Here are five musicians that birthed and transformed this musical genre. The piano background builds the song to a fever pitch, while the simple but effective vocals will give you chills while you wait for the song to drop. Once the beat hits, you’ll have a hard time embracing the song and dancing nonstop. The combination of house beats, psychedelic synths, and techno created Acid House. This sound was embraced by Europe and helped birth the careers of some of the biggest DJs in the world, including Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, and Pete Tong. The piano riff and drums build and build until Jefferson drops one of the most iconic vocals of any house song to date.

This is prevalent in commercial house music more than it is in the underground styles. Almost every house song that has ever been written will have a 4/4 time signature. Hi-hats and claps are normally played offbeat to add funk to the tune. This influential style of music continues to evolve and develop through globalization, emerging technology, cross-genre influences, cultural changes, and more.

To those who regard electronic music as being devoid of emotion, we give you this staggering 1986 masterpiece from the saintly Larry Heard (under his Mr Fingers alias). The ultimate break-of-dawn anthem, the combination of butt-shaking low-end acid bass and bleary-eyed synths make this more vivid than an acid flashback. There are plenty of early ’90s tracks that mixed house and rave to great effect, but perhaps none more so than this impossibly energetic stomper. The manic piano stabs, rushing rhythm and commanding vocals provide a soundtrack for burning more calories than any exercise video ever did. Released in 2006, when house was being drowned out by the sounds of amped-up electro, the totemic figure of Larry Heard quietly dropped this magisterial piece of vocal-acid treasure.

DJs and music producers in Chicago, New York, and Detroit delved deeper into dance music production and embraced these machines. New approaches towards music creation led to a sound which was deeper, rawer, and more designed to make people dance. Many newly produced house music is even considered pop because of how much the sound is filtered and altered. Many sub-genres have been produced over the years, but many of them lose popularity and get replaced with new sub-genres. Though house music nowadays does not sound much like it used to, house music is still quite popular in nightclubs.

The song works perfectly during a sunset gig in Ibiza or a disco in NYC. Released in 1986, “Your Love” is one of the first house records to receive critical praise for the recording industry. Here are some of the most common characteristics you’ll find in a house music song.
The growth of homeless communities in open spaces throughout the city speaks to that problem, whether they’re under freeway onramps, in RVs lining the curbs or in encampments in and around green spaces. The elusive promise of home ownership is a moving target for a wide swath of Southern Californians, with the average price of a home coming in at $869,082, according to the latest data from Zillow. Jesse Saunders: ‘House music offered a safe space for Black and gay people’
"I was in a car with a friend of mine, going to his house on the South Side and we were at a stoplight. There was a tavern on the corner with a sign saying, 'We play house music.' That was the first time I heard of it," Knuckles recalled in a Red Bull Music Academy interview with Jeff Mao in 2011. In Detroit during the early and mid-1980s, a new kind of electronic dance music began to emerge around Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, known as the Belleville Three. The artists fused eclectic, futuristic sounds into a signature Detroit dance sound that was a main influence for the later techno genre. House music became the first direct descendant of disco in the early 80s. It’s said “house was born from the ashes of Disco” after the launch of an anti-disco movement. Disco emerged in the early 70s as an underground movement born out of the urban gay culture in New York City.
French house combined the funk of Chicago house, the repetitiveness and robotic sound of Detroit techno, and combined it with a pop vibe to create something truly unique. Birthed from Disco DJs, House owes much of its sound to disco musicians and producers in the 1970s. You’ll find countless house music records those sample melodies, basslines, and vocals from disco and soul tracks. One of the finest example of how dance music could do more than just borrow hooks and melodies from pop, ‘Where Love Lives’ went one step further. Britsh singer Alison Limerick’s rich vocal lines are layered over upfront house beats, creating the perfect crossover record, aimed right at the mainstream, but still retaining the dance music credentials of all involved. Though it originally dropped in 1990, it wasn’t until 1996 that a remix package finally sent ‘Where Love Lives’ into the dizzy heights of the UK top ten, where it really belonged.
Following the bacchanalian spirit of acid house, some preferred manic music designed for large one-time-only raves (all-night parties in warehouses or fields). Others favoured the more “mature,” club-oriented style of soulful house called garage (named after New York City’s Paradise Garage club). Following early homegrown efforts by the likes of A Guy Called Gerald, Britain also started producing its own mutations of the Chicago sound. Pioneered by Leftfield, another subgenre called progressive house excised the style’s gay-disco roots and explored production techniques that gave the music a hypnotic quality. Bombastic introductions and anthemlike choruses characterized the subgenres labeled handbag and epic house. NU-NRG (a gay, hard-core style) and tech-house (which took an abstract minimalist approach) were other significant subgenres that emerged.
DJs that spin Hall & Oates and Johnny Cash keep the peculiar party grooving well into the night. If your any of your friend hoots this weekend, ‘who wants to party? ’ You must tell them about Los Globos if they yearn to have some real fun. Located at Sunset Blvd in the heart of the famous neighborhood of Los Angeles, Silverlake. Given its ideal location, anyone can reach Los Globos from anywhere around the city. By the early 1990s, artists of note on those two labels included Dajae, DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter, DJ Rush, Paul Johnson, Joe Lewis, and Glenn Underground. Hip-hop has been enjoying its moment for decades as the dominant selling music in the U.S. But even beyond sales, the music also has influenced the format of other musical genres. Which means there are hip-hop artists well into their 50s and 60s. The hip-hop audience is also now an audience that reaches across six decades. It's arguable one of the most influential cultural phenomena in our lifetime.
President Joe Biden is also set to be in attendance, as well as First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. In the Searles Valley, the median household income was $54,000 in 2022, well below the statewide average of $92,000, according to census data. The poverty rate, however, was nearly 20%, far exceeding California’s 12% overall rate. “In Trona, you’re talking about 115-degree summers, but people adjust and they get through,” Berri said. More recently, Searles Valley, which includes Trona, saw its population fall 15% between 2010 and 2022, according to census data.
By the mid-80s, subgenres of house music emerged such as deep house and acid house. Record labels soon noticed the rising popularity of these genres. The most revered of these labels was Chicago’s Trax Records on North Clark Street.
Whether it’s deep, funky, progressive, or electro, house music does have a few key characteristics that make it house. House music is a genre that has been taking the world by storm for over three decades. With its pounding beats, soulful vocals, and funky grooves, House music has become a staple in the world of electronic dance music.
As we’ve seen, particularly in the UK, house was chart music from the outset. And as the ‘90s went on, big, bold house tunes became part of the cultural fabric. Sometimes they were based in Eurodance, like Livin’ Joy’s “Dreamer” or JX’s “Son of a Gun,” the work of Sister Bliss, or Faithless. Crucially, too, in 1985 came “Sensation”, one of the few releases from Ron Hardy, whose Music Box club was pushing a harder, more electronic, more hedonistic vibe than Knuckles’ soulful sets. This was when Knuckles’s own debut came out, as did Marshall Jefferson’s perennial “The House Music Anthem,” while tunes like Farley “Jackmaster” Funk and Jesse Saunders feat. Darryl Pand’s “Love Can’t Turn Around” and Steve “Silk” Hurley’s “Jack Your Body” became international hits; Larry Heard and Fingers Inc. began prolifically releasing masterpieces like “Mystery of Love”; and Phuture’s “Acid Tracks” was being rinsed on tape by Hardy at the Music Box.
Kevin Saunderson, of course, trampled the distinction between house and techno with songs like Reese’s “Rock to the Beat” and Inner City’s “Good Life”. Techno second-wavers Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen, Kelli K-Hand and Blake Baxter all had a jackin’ house groove at the heart of what they did from early on. Even Underground Resistance began with vocal house, in their still-glorious tracks with singer Yolanda like “Your Time is Up”.
‘No UFO’s’ was decidedly, defiantly different to the abundance of smoother, Chicago-style tracks of the time (1985), making its weird, robotic grooves even more alluring. Afro house is one of the loosest possible definitions — after all, Africa is an entire continent, and its influence is manifold, both on the roots of house, and now directly as countries and cities across the region develop their own sounds. African music had been bonded into disco (think Manu Dibango’s “Soul Makossa”) and house (the remixes of Mory Kante’s “Yeke Yeke”) from the start, but these were normally one offs. Above all, the mighty Defected label – with the various imprints it’s taken under its umbrella, like Classic Music Company, Nu Groove, and Soul Heaven – has seen to that! When you’ve got a heart-stopping voice and a rock solid beat, — whether it’s a hands in the air banger or a small hours heartbreaker — soul never ages.
'Challengers' Heats Up: How Zendaya's Star Power and a Sexy Love Triangle Could Give Gen Z Its Next Movie Obsession
A group of friends discovered acid house in Ibiza in 1988 and decided to host their acid house nights. These nights quickly grew out of control, and the promoters began hosting huge illegal raves in warehouses and fields near London. The history of the house can be traced to the Warehouse nightclub in Chicago.

It also soundtracked countless chill-rooms across the land as the perfect example of ambient-leaning dance music which still had enough of a pulse to dance to, should you be able to drag yourself off the bean bag. According to legend, it cost Orbital (a.k.a. Sevenoaks-born brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll) less than £1 to produce. Originally a riff on a proto-house classic, Isaac Hayes’s 1975 disco foray ‘I Can’t Turn Around’, this collaboration between turbo-lunged singer Darryl Pandy and Farley Keith blew the roof off house music at the time. It still has the distinction of being a true crossover hit that’s maintained its dancefloor appeal decades on. Techno master Juan Atkins also made some incredible, spacey proto-house under his electrified Model 500 moniker.
Things to do around Los Angeles
From humble beginnings in Chicago to packing stadiums worldwide, here is the history of house music. As one of the most successful EDM producers, Guetta has brought house music to the masses. “One More Time” is a masterful French house production that went on to have worldwide crossover appeal. Off their second album, Discovery, Daft Punk transformed house music forever, and it finally began to get the attention it deserved on an international scale. Samples and loops are a perfect match for house music’s repetitive nature. What makes house music amazing and how did it become such an important musical genre?
A few records emerged through ‘84 and ‘85, with tracks from soon-to-be household names like Farley “Jackmaster” Funk’s ”Jack the Bass”, Jamie Principle’s ”Waiting on my Angel” and Ralphi Rosario’s ”Pump it Up” beginning to appear on labels like Trax and DJ international. And of course New York and New Jersey’s club scenes continued innovating sonically, as we’ll see later. But these varied elements truly came together in one windy, Midwest American city.
‘Mystery of Love’ – Fingers Inc.
It’s really weird that people come up to me who say “I didn’t know Black people like house music” because that’s how it began. New York people mixed and mingled, Chicago people didn’t so much. The Playground [the early Chicago house club Saunders ran] was one of the first places in the city where you’d get straight kids, the gay crowd, all these people came together in one place, and it was really interesting.
At the time, I loved the music, but I thought club music was faceless. It didn’t offer me the potential to reach the masses with a big hit. The best thing about house in the early days was when people finally got it, when they realised they didn’t have to listen to the radio and commercial music any more.

In the late 1980s, Nu Groove Records launched and nurtured the careers of Rheji Burrell and Rhano Burrell, collectively known as Burrell (after a brief stay on Virgin America via Timmy Regisford and Frank Mendez). Nu Groove also had a stable of other NYC underground scene DJs. The Burrells created the "New York Underground" sound of house, and they did more than 30 releases on this label featuring this sound.
Future House is one of the newer genres because it emerged during the 2010s. It contains many futuristic sounds and is influenced by UK Garage and Deep House. It is influenced by synthpop, electro music from the ’80s, and techno. It originated back during the 1980s when house music was created. House music is made by mixing and combining many songs and effects that sound well together.
” At the center of the field was a large collection of records rigged with dynamite. The explosion scattered records high into the air and left a crater in center field. Chaos then erupted when thousands of fans rushed the field, started fires by burning records, and vandalized the stadium. The riots and a ruined field forced the White Sox to forfeit the second game. Starting with my first EDM event in 2010 at Nocturnal Wonderland and hearing One by Swedish House Mafia and Benny Bennassi’s “Satisfaction” I have been hooked on EDM.
Is finally feeling like one big (cohesive) city again, with an eclectic mix of artists and venues bringing everyone together for a good time. Some of the biggest names in house music will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the genre in Grant Park as part of this summer’s NASCAR Chicago Street Race Weekend (July 6-7), it was announced Thursday. Those who love to experience some with a vintage style would find Cicada the most pleasing place in the town. If you feel the same about your sense of partying style, then you must gotta visit this place where you can time travel. Cicada Club is a place which gives off a sensation as if the time has been preserved from 1928.
But there was also the burgeoning sound of what was the beginning of house music, which was kind of an amalgam of all this music but done in a very minimal style. Technology was coming in that allowed new, young DJs to start putting beats, samples and ideas together on basic four-track recorders. In New York, Chicago and Baltimore, it was just our own world, but we were creating this storm. Suddenly, the rest of the world – and mainly the UK – started looking at what was happening in this underground scene and embraced it fully, giving it a commercial platform. First recorded by Jamie Principle (hailing from – you've guessed it – Chicago), the ‘Godfather of House’ Frankie Knuckles made the track famous with his slightly punchier version, still featuring Principle.
There are a few things you should keep in mind when dancing to this type of music. House music is now considered an umbrella term for many electronic music styles or, as we call it nowadays, EDM. Deep House sounds almost like the original house music, but it has a slower rhythm. Bass house is another sub-genre of house music that had a faster tempo than the other sub-genres. Acid House is a sub-genre of house music that first became known during the mid-1980s.

Although the fjord was picturesque, the travel time to access it was far too long. The occasional sound of nature punctuates the serenity of the fjord—water lapping against the vessel’s hull, the distant cry of a bald eagle, or the sound of a waterfall. With temperatures beginning to rise, the snow meltwater added to the volume of water in nearby waterfalls.

If you visit during a dry spell in the peak of summer, you may not see the cascades we enjoyed. The Behm Channel separates Revillagigedo Island from the mainland and offers panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and emerald-green cliffs that plunge dramatically into the water below. On the way, our naturalist pointed out the Saxman Native Village, another popular shore excursion. We saw an active bald eagle’s nest and many eagles resting in the trees, which were easy to spot with their white heads. When leaving Ketchikan on Revillagigedo Island, the vessel cruises slowly to adhere to the marine bylaws. He knew our time constraints and was able to work to get us back to our cruise ship on time. However, with clear skies, and calm seas, we enjoyed the rock formations and landscapes from the outdoor deck.
It takes a two-hour boat tour to reach Misty Fjords, and if I had known that, I’m not honestly sure I would have booked this tour. The city's best-known landmark is The Space Needle observation tower in downtown (height 184 m / 604 ft), having 6 floors (top floor heigth 158 m / 518 ft) and 3 lifts.

No matter which terminal you sail from there is parking available at the port. And while it is a bit pricey, it’s also extremely convenient. You can arrive on your own schedule and also leave right when you get off the ship the day your cruise returns. Every cruise line operating out of Seattle offers both one-way and round trip transfers to/from Sea-Tac to/from Pier 66.

Smith Cove Cruise Terminal is close to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (~20-25 min drive) and to downtown (~10 min drive). The terminal is located on Pier #90 and Pier #91, at approx 2 mi (3 km) from downtown in northwestern direction. This port used to serve as an industrial port and a resupply base and still looks a kind of industrial. The Smith Cove terminal offers car rental desk, concierge, luggage handling, retail kiosks, check-in and customs.

If you're nearing or already have hit retirement age and prefer to travel mostly with people who are at a similar stage in life as you, you'll feel right at home on a Holland America ship. Unlike the Royal Caribbean and Norwegian ships mentioned above, the two Princess ships sailing from Seattle don't have top decks heavily skewed to family fun. Instead, their top decks offer lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas where you can enjoy the experience of being at sea without much hustle and bustle. NCL's USD 30 million investment into Pier 66 allowed in Seattle to be homeported the ever-largest Alaskan ship - Norwegian Bliss. The liner started turnaround (roundtrip itinerary) operations in June 2018 with 7-day Inside Passage cruises. To handle new ship's capacity (5200 passengers, 1730 crew), Terminal 66 was expanded from 44,000 ft2 (4090 m2) to 151,000 ft2 (14030 m2).

In 2015, the cruise port handled 192 ship calls and 895,055 passengers. On August 12, 2015, the seaport signed a 15-year lease deal with NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings). The deal secured all NCLH ships (NCL, Oceania and RSSC-Regent Seven Seas) in Port Seattle for the full term of the lease of Bell Street Terminal (Pier 66). The guaranteed passenger volume was estimated to bring ~USD 73 million of revenue to the cruise port. According to official statistics, Alaskan cruises from Seattle generate ~USD 440 million in economic impact annually.
And finally, no visit to Pike Place is complete without a Russian hand held pie from Piroshky, Piroshky. They have both savory and sweet options and my personal favorite is the Moscow roll. It’s true, we do have a homeless population (some of whom are suffering from mental illnesses) and you will see tents in some areas. But overall, I bet you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what a beautiful, vibrant, generally clean and safe city Seattle is.

On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier. It's the sort of itinerary that specifically appeals to retirees with the time (and money) to book such a long trip. In addition, an onboard Klondike Festival brings added family entertainment, including gold nugget arts and crafts projects, a naturalist exhibition, harmonica music classes and North to Alaska dance performances. Both ships are almost identical, but we give Discovery Princess the edge only because it's newer than Royal Princess.
A special zone for solo travelers is a rare concept in the cruise world, where almost all rooms for vacationers are designed for two people and sold with per-person fares that are based on two people occupying the room. Why did we pick Norwegian Encore over Norwegian Bliss as the ship offering the best Alaska cruises from Seattle for luxury lovers? Built a year after Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Encore offers one big improvement for the upscale crowd as compared to Norwegian Bliss. All four ships are loaded with all sorts of gee-whiz family attractions, from bumper car pavilions and skydiving simulators on the Royal Caribbean vessels to go-kart tracks and laser tag courses on the Norwegian ships. Other cruises might be best for solo travelers or travelers on a tight budget.
The parking lot is located a bit of a walk from the terminal, but a free shuttle is available to transport you and your luggage. Unlike ports in Florida that might attract a lot of locals, most passengers sailing from Seattle are from out of town and unfamiliar with the port and what it offers. For those, we’ve created this complete guide to cruising from the Port of Seattle. Notably, both Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore boast large private zones for solo travelers — something you won't find on any other cruise ship sailing out of Seattle. We suspect the lower starting prices for Holland America ships as compared to Carnival ships on Alaska sailings out of Seattle is because Alaska cruises from Seattle are round-trip voyages.
Seattle is the homeport of the Coast Guard icebreaker USCGC Healy. On a cruise from Seattle, relive history at Pioneer Square, the city’s oldest neighborhood dating back to 1852. Ascend the Space Needle, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city from the 520-foot high skydeck. Learn how commercial jets are assembled at Boeing’s Future of Flight Aviation Center. Or sample crab cakes, chowder and cheese at Pike Place Market, or shop the artisan handicrafts and curio markets within.
Although the official dress code is "cruise casual," you might want to dress up a bit for dinner at Rudi's, given the atmosphere. However, Sodamin truly shines with his latest venture, Rudi's Seagrill on Carnival Cruise Line's Excel Class ships, which are the newest in the fleet. To top it off, enjoy dishes such as apple cheesecake with limoncello whipped cream, chocolate truffle cake, white chocolate bread pudding or key lime pie for dessert.

Adults can dine there for $49 per person, which includes a starter, main and dessert. Kids 11 and younger can order from the children's menu for $15. Starters include blue mussels, seared shrimp, oysters and the aforementioned lobster mac and cheese. Soup and salad choices include seafood bisque, fisherman's stew, house tossed salad or baby romaine with cauliflower and honey nut squash. Although Carnival has had onboard seafood options for years, this is a far cry from the pool deck's Seafood Shack (which recently sold me a mediocre crabcake). Instead, at Rudi's, you'll find a don't-miss lobster mac and cheese, plenty of meat and seafood selections, and crabcakes that are actually worth the price of admission.
Crab Place gift cards are the perfect way to send seafood to family and friends. Go beyond the traditional waterfront restaurant experience and join us for a cruise filled with delicious food and beverages, along with scenery that you won’t forget. We’ve had people in the past book their hotel stay in Solomon’s Island or Lexington Park. Marriott’s online tool shows hotels in those areas being miles from the event (which it is). Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. Rudi's Seagrill, Carnival Cruise Line's high-end seafood restaurant, offers a menu of delicious and beautifully prepared dishes, served in a dining room that's light and airy. Glass fish accents and pops of blue color enhance the nautical vibe.
The Sundeck has all 3x large-sized shaded seating areas (covered by retractable canopies) and 2x SkyLights (glass roof covers) over the Sky Lounge (aft) and the Atrium/Vestibule (midship-portside). Yet every step of the way, I've seen gracious crewmembers help them up the stairs, off the ship's bow ramp, and into the motorcoach. There's even a little golf cart that travels in the ship (in the retractable bow) to help get passengers up the often steep boat ramps and to the motorcoaches, where drivers are willing to help them onboard. American Cruise Lines makes exploring these places easy, thanks to its fleet of three branded motorcoaches that travel with the ship on its route. ACL offers a complimentary local bus loop in most ports of call, along with premium shore excursions that can be purchased for a reasonable price -- between $20 and $195 on our particular itinerary, with most coming in well under $100 per person.
Deck Plans
The improved ship design of the Modern Riverboat series allows "bow landings" via a retractable and rotating gangway (passenger bridge) that extends from Main Deck (deck 1) to the dock or directly onto the river bank. This feature is available on all traditional-design US paddlewheel riverboats and provides expanded options for river cruise itineraries unmatched by most newbuild river cruise ships. MS American Serenade features innovative interior design concepts - from the 4-story glass-walled Vestibule (Atrium) to spacious indoor and outdoor lounges, large open-deck spaces, floor-ceiling windows throughout the vessel.
American Cruise Lines' Offers an Enriching Experience on the Waterways of The U.S.
Guests are pampered and given the staff’s full attention from the time you board to when you leave. We have never cruised on ships where the managers and crew, including the captain, make such a special effort to mingle and interact with the guests. There was a seating area at the foot of our king-size bed, a desk and plenty of storage for our week’s worth of clothing and gear. With a little extra maneuvering, we managed to get our suitcases under the bed. Like most newer ships, it offers a good number of electrical outlets and USB ports, which is always welcome. But its greatest strength lies in its more obscure itineraries -- a journey up the Hudson from New York to Albany.
ACL-American Cruise Lines begins its biggest season ever on the Mississippi

'American Serenade' docks at Ross's Landing; trekking from Chattanooga to Nashville.
The ship itself is quite comfortable with ample cabins on 3 decks, 2 lounges, an open-air 5th deck, and a large dining area. We enjoyed the small ship cruising ambience and will certainly consider another river cruise in the future with American Cruise Lines. “Like American Symphony, the 180-passenger American Serenade introduces an updated modern interior design, integrating an elegant and refined aesthetic with our tradition for the spacious comfort found aboard all of our ships,” the company says of the new ship on its website. “Drawing inspiration from the geography across America, the new interior design highlights natural textural elements and serene color palettes.” Rooms range in size from 250 to 650 square feet, and all include full-size baths, closets, and private balconies. Beyond the rooms, the new ship also allows guests to drink in the views from every angle in its four-story glass atrium, located in the middle of the ship. American Serenade cruise ship deck plan shows a total of 91 staterooms for 175 passengers served by 43 crew/staff.
I normally skip entertainment but find myself attending their lectures and shows each day. Cabins aboard American Serenade are generously sized, with the vast majority onboard measuring at least 315 square feet and going up in size from there. Each cabin offers a generously-sized bathroom, and ample storage space, though curiously beds are too low to allow luggage to be placed underneath them. The first modern riverboats ever in the United States are showcasing several pioneering innovations on America’s waters. With its clean and uncluttered décor, the Serenade looks more like a modern European river cruise ship than one of the old-fashioned paddlewheel boats seen on the mighty Mississippi. Passengers aboard American Serenade tend to be predominantly 70+ and exclusively American.
ALL CRUISE LINES (1543 SHIPS)
American Cruise Lines will continue to offer the longest river cruise itinerary in the U.S., its 22-day Complete Mississippi River trip, which traverses 10 states as it travels almost the entire length of the river. Dates for that itinerary kick off in June and August aboard the American Serenade in August 2023. As mentioned, American Serenade is one of the newest ships in the fleet, launched in 2023 from the line’s own shipyard in Salisbury, Maryland.
Deck layouts
Featured are floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors with a private balcony where you can sit and enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Ft., these staterooms also offer a sitting area, desk, and full-size bathrooms. Through sliding glass doors visit your private balcony complete with a sitting area, the perfect place to enjoy breakfast room service or watch the sun set. Each Grand Suite features a lavish bedroom and a separate living room ideal for gathering with family and friends after an invigorating day of exploration. All Grand suites include double sinks in the bathroom complete with plush robes for your comfort. Your in-suite mini-refrigerator will be fully stocked and replenished throughout the week with juices, waters, white and red wine.
The ship has only one wheelchair-accessible cabin (AAR-category room #124) located forward-starboard on Deck 1 (Lobby Deck). The stateroom is designed specifically for disabled passengers and has wider doors and an ADA-compliant bathroom. Free of charge Wi-Fi Internet access (shipwide coverage) and several Internet computers are located around the cruise ship.
(6 p.m. EDT) -- It's been nearly a week since I stepped off American Cruise Lines' American Serenade in Chattanooga, Tennessee -- but the experience has stayed with me every day since. Over the course of a week, I set sail on the rapidly-expanding U.S.-based river cruise line for a voyage through the heart of America, sailing from Nashville to Chattanooga by way of Paducah, Kentucky; Savannah, Tennessee, and the Alabama towns of Florence and Decatur. Along with that unusual bow, the American Serenade features a welcoming modern interior design with a serene color palette, lovely woodwork and well-planned lighting.
Lounges soar 40 feet above the water with triple the glass of other riverboats. Founded in 1991, American Cruise Lines specializes in small-ship coastal and river cruises throughout the United States. Each American Cruise Lines vessel is a traditional USA-built (at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland) as well as American-flagged and crewed. Cruise Director Brandon Wind said our weeklong Music Cities Cruise from Memphis to Nashville is fully booked with 172 passengers and 46 crew members.
And in that, American Cruise Lines is also modernizing the state of U.S.-based river cruising, which is finally getting away from the replica paddle wheelers that look cool but don't really contribute meaningfully to the overall cruise experience. American Cruise Lines recognizes the historic significance of these waterways, with onboard entertainment and programming that is meant to explore and highlight local culture, from music and song to historically-minded lectures and shore excursions. You can learn about the American Civil War -- in the region you are sailing through -- before you ever set foot on land. The lectures we had aboard prepared me for our visit to the Shiloh National Cemetery and the Tennessee River Museum. All staterooms feature a private, step-out balcony accessible from the living area via a sliding, floor-ceiling glass door. All cabin balconies are furnished with a small table and two deckchairs.
Launched in 2023, American Serenade is the sixth member of American Cruise Lines' fleet of modern riverboats. Eschewing the Mark Twain-era paddlewheeler look sported by so many U.S. river cruise lines (including ACL), American Serenade is sleek and spacious, channeling a European-style river cruise ambiance and bringing it to the waterways of America. I am the only interloper on this river cruise who is not an American citizen. American Cruise Lines proudly attracts passengers predominantly from the United States who are eager to see their own country. I, as the lone Canadian (and foreigner) onboard, am interested to see it with them. AAC staterooms are conveniently located on the second deck and provide maximized comfort.
For those who like to be in the heart of the action, forward-facing observation decks are located on Deck 2 (the Bow Terrace) and on Deck 3 in front of the River Lounge. Passengers can also admire the ship's wake from a series of open decks all the way aft on Decks 2, 3 and 4. American Serenade has two small Fitness Centers located on Deck 2 aft that seemed lonely and neglected on our voyage, though passengers did make use of the Jogging Track on Deck 4. There is no spa onboard, and American Serenade does not have either pools nor hot tubs -- so leave the bathing suit at home. Itineraries aboard American Serenade typically include a complimentary pre-cruise hotel stay in the port of embarkation. American Cruise Line's "Modern Riverboats" are all constructed at Chesapeake Shipbuilding (shipyard in Salisbury MA).
T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, tank tops, caps and pool wear are not allowed in the main or specialty restaurants at any time. Shorts and flip-flops are not allowed during evening hours. The answer is that it is far more likely to be enforced in specialty restaurants than in other venues. You may also find that the shorter the cruise, the less formal even formal night becomes onboard. Where the ship sails may also play a role in how passengers tend to dress.
Holiday celebrations at sea
I usually don’t like going to faux British pubs, for the same reason I don’t go to “American-style” restaurants overseas. Unlike bars on land, cruise ship bars don’t kick patrons out – you can sit in a lounge all night if you want, even if the bar isn’t serving drinks. So keep on their good side by moving to a nearby chair when bar service is scheduled to close. One of the perks that Princess lists for suite passengers is plush bathrobes.
Live jazz & craft cocktails
There are very few tux wearing men net alone a white or black one. So feel free to wear your tux white or black anytime you want. I've seen everything between pajamas and a speedo on formal night. We just try to look civilized like maybe going to a church wedding.
Your wireless provider must have a roaming agreement with Wireless Maritime Services (WMS) in order for you to use your mobile phone with this service. Your mobile device must be able to roam internationally, and international roaming must be enabled on your device. If you have a prepaid device, please confirm with your wireless carrier if you are able to use it at sea; not all prepaid devices are supported. Or join us in one of our main dining rooms for lunch served up by a staff – from chefs to waiters – dedicated to making your dining experience something special. Complimentary gaming lessons for slots and table games are held on each cruise, along with exciting tournaments.
Most cruises also include one or more theme nights (like Pirate Night). The so-called evening chic dress code on Celebrity Cruises matches the line's newest Edge Class ships, Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex. Suggested attire on these nights is dressier, and formalwear (including jackets and ties for men) is welcomed but not required. This might include pants with a dress shirt or sweater for men -- with an optional sports coat or blazer -- or cocktail dresses or skirts or pants with an elegant top for women. Cruise elegant on Carnival Cruises means dress slacks, dress shirts and optional sport coatsfor men and cocktail dresses, pantsuits and elegant skirts and blouses for women.
You may also want to pack binoculars for an even closer look at all the splendor the Great Land has to offer. The reservation says there is 1 formal night and I have a few questions. Relive the roots of jazz each evening with our live musicians performing brilliant classics and telling tales of true jazz legends throughout the ages. Sip cocktail favorites from Master Mixologist, Rob Floyd as well as specialty gin cocktails crafted exclusively for Take Five.
Schedule for all the ships
However, in my opinion, Princess Cruises doesn’t heavily promote various dress codes, making theme nights not as prominent as on other cruise lines. I think the "collared" idea is to suggest a button up dress shirt rather than a "collarless" tee shirt. On Hawaiian cruises, you see a lot of Hawaiian shirts because that can be formal dress in the islands.
Performances beckon from every corner of a Princess ship
As for men, tuxedos, dinner jackets, or dark suits with a tie for men. For evenings, the recommended onboard attire is “elegant casual.” Suggested clothing for men includes trousers and collared shirts (ties and jackets are optional but not required). For women, acceptable attire includes dresses, a skirt, or slacks with a blouse or sweater. The dress code at Remy, the other adults-only specialty restaurant (only on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy), is a bit dressier. Slacks and jackets are required for men (ties optional), and cocktail dresses, pantsuits or skirts with blouses for women.
It’s also typical for people to coordinate with their tablemates, so the entire table tends to dress similarly. For example, you may have a table where everyone is dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns or an entire table where the women are in cocktail dresses and men are in suits. On some nights aboard a Disney cruise, the ship will hold a special themed night, including a pirate theme, dress-up night, or semi-formal night. During dress-up night, the cruise line recommends dress pants with a jacket or a suit for men and a dress or pantsuit for women during dress-up night. Most cruise lines will have one formal night on sailings of less than six days and two formal nights on cruises of 7 days and more.

Approval of services will be made based on schedule suitability, appropriate onboard supplies, etc. Please bring your Letter of Celebret or Letter of Good Standing with you to provide to the onboard staff.
Show lounges, dining rooms and all food services areas on board all Princess ships are non-smoking. As a safety precaution, guests are reminded to properly dispose of cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco, which are never to be thrown overboard as this may be sucked back into the ship and cause fires. The dress code onboard Costa Cruise Line's ships is overall casual. If you're wondering what you should wear on a cruise, especially at night, here's how each major cruise line would like you to dress. Once you've made it onboard, it's important to know that most cruise lines reiterate the dress codes for specific times and venues in each day's newsletter.
If you’re not in a suite, you might think that you can’t have a bathrobe…but you can! Just ask your cabin steward when he comes to introduce himself on embarkation day. Plus, he’ll deliver them on hangers, which there are never enough of in cruise staterooms (you can also ask for extra hangers while you’re at it). Exploring ports of call will be one of the highlights of your cruise, and one of the best ways to do this is on a shore excursion.
Check with the cruise line or your travel agent to see how many formal nights are planned for your particular voyage. Each cruise line has its own dress codes, and below, I have compiled a list of formal night dress codes by cruise line. Some cruise lines are more relaxed than others, while some do not have formal nights. We’ve broken down the formal night requirements of the major cruise lines below. Specifically, if you plan to visit any of the higher-end specialty restaurants on the ship, such as the steakhouse, then there may be a dress code. For the most part, the only time you’ll need to dress anything other than casual is if you participate in formal night.
Credit cards are not accepted in the casino; all activity is charged to the guest’s stateroom account, which must then be settled prior to disembarking from the ship. Cash or traveler’s checks may be exchanged for casino chips. Fill every day with a wide variety of exciting onboard activities from basketball to table tennis to trivia. Watch a culinary demonstration, enjoy wine tasting, or join in games by the pool. Our ships have all the amenities you need for a real vacation, one where you can recharge and reconnect with loved ones. There are plenty of casual dining options in the World Fresh Marketplace, The Eatery, Horizon Court, International Café, and at our top deck grill, pizzeria and ice cream bar.
When classic light opera meets popular music, the result is an extravaganza that brings the house to its feet. Although you can’t pack your own clothes iron or steamer (they’re a fire hazard on ships), some cruise lines do have passenger laundry rooms with an iron you can use to touch up your outfits. This sleek charcoal sheath dress features ruching at the waist and an embellished halter neckline that adds just a hint of sparkle. Add a pair of black strappy heels and a crystal cuff bracelet to complete your formal night look.
